The F3EAD loop: Find, Fix, Finish — and then?
Find, Fix, Finish. The reflex is familiar to every high-performing organisation: spot the problem, frame it, solve it. Most stop there. The Special Forces, however, run a longer loop: F3EAD. And it is in its second half that the war of tempo is won.
F3EAD is the acronym for six stages: Find, Fix, Finish, Exploit, Analyze, Disseminate. It is an intelligence-driven decision loop, where action is not an end but a source of information that feeds the next decision. Its logic is simple: you do not run an operation to conclude it, you run it to learn faster than the situation changes.
F3: find, fix, finish
The first half of the loop is the one businesses master best. It is the execution sequence.
Find: identify the real target
Everything begins with intelligence. Find is not reacting to the first signal that comes along; it is distinguishing the signal from the noise and naming the true objective. In business, most mistakes do not come from poor execution, but from the wrong target. You quickly solve a problem that was not the right one.
Fix: frame and qualify
Fixing the target means locating it precisely, qualifying it, gathering the conditions for action. You turn an intuition into certainty sufficient to act. It is the step that separates agitation from precision.
Finish: execute cleanly
Finish is the action, carried out with commitment and without hesitation once the decision is made. It is the most visible stage, and that is precisely why people wrongly believe the loop stops here.
EAD: exploit, analyse, disseminate
The second half of the loop is the one almost no one plays in business. Yet this is where lasting advantage is built, because it turns every action into collective intelligence.
Exploit: extract everything the action offers
Every operation, every decision, every exchange leaves raw material: data, observations, clues. Exploit means harvesting it methodically rather than immediately moving on to the next topic. In business, it is the difference between a meeting that ends and a meeting that produces knowledge.
Analyze: extract meaning from it
Raw data is worth nothing without analysis. This stage turns information into understanding: what worked, what failed, why, and what it changes going forward. It is the culture of lessons-learned and the After Action Review, applied rigorously after every success as well as every failure.
Disseminate: share with the collective
An analysis that stays in one head is a wasted analysis. Disseminate means circulating the knowledge so that the whole organisation decides better next time. It is what turns a team into a learning system, where information does not stop at silos.
