The Leader Training Course, or LTC, is a basic military instruction exercise. The principle is simple: a team must clear a physical obstacle with limited means, a tight time limit and constraining rules. What matters is not so much success as how the team organises itself. There is nothing exceptional in the setup; all its value lies in the perfect mastery of the fundamentals, and that is precisely where the DNA of the Special Forces is forged.
The obstacle does not lie
In a meeting, anyone can talk like a leader. Faced with a real obstacle, the masks come off. You immediately see who takes the initiative, who structures, who unites, who doubts and who follows. The LTC makes visible what the org chart hides.
What the LTC teaches
- Clarify the objective before acting. Teams that fail rush in. Those that succeed take ten seconds to frame the task.
- Designate a decision-maker. Without a clear leader, the team scatters. Rotating leadership works, provided it is explicit.
- Listen to skills, not status. The best plan sometimes comes from the quietest person. A good leader knows how to draw it out.
- Debrief without complacency. The educational value lies in the cool-headed analysis, conducted with honesty and care.
From the field to the office
The point of the LTC is not the physical feat, but the transfer. The behaviours observed in front of the obstacle are exactly those that replay in the leadership team.
